Common

The items in the Common menu are metadata based on common international standards.

Countries

A Country (or dependent territory or special area of geographical interest) included in ISO 3166.

Countries contain the following fields:

  • ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2: The 2 letter ISO 3166 code representing the country.

  • Name: The name of the country as displayed in the database.

  • ISO 3166-1 Alpha-3: The 3 letter ISO 3166 code representing the country.

  • ISO 3166-1 Numeric: The numeric ISO 3166 code representing the country.

  • ISO English ASCII name: The name of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency with accented characters replaced by their ASCII equivalents.

  • ISO English ASCII full name: The full formal name of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency with accented characters replaced by their ASCII equivalents.

  • ISO English name: The name of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.

  • ISO English full name: The full formal name of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.

  • ISO French name: The name in French of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.

  • ISO French full name: The full formal name in French of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.

  • ISO Spanish name: The name in Spanish of the Country approved by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.

Currencies

A monetary unit in common use and included in ISO 4217.

Currencies contain the following fields:

  • ISO 4217 Alpha-3: The 3 letter ISO 4217 code representing the currency.

  • ISO 4217 Numeric: The numeric ISO 4217 code representing the currency.

  • Name: The ISO 4217 English name of the currency.

Products

A product such as a commodity or service classified by a FEWS NET system that is based on UN CPC v2 codes. CPC codes are prefixed with R, L, P or S, a letter indicating whether the Product is Raw agricultural output, Live animals, a Processed product or a Service.

Classified products include the following fields:

  • CPC v2.1: A code from the FEWS NET classification structure of products based on version 2.1 of the UN’s Central Product Classification rules.

  • Description: A description of the product.

  • Common name: The common name for the product.

  • Scientific name: The scientific name for the product.

  • Unit of Measure: A unit of measure commonly used for the product.

  • Kcals per Unit: The number of kilocalories the product contains per the chosen unit of measure.

  • Aliases: A list of alternate names for the product.

  • CPC v2: A code from the FEWS NET classification structure of products based on version 2 of the UN’s Central Product Classification rules.

  • HS2012: The 6-digit codes for the Product in the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS), stored as XXXX.YY

  • Position and Relative to: These fields position the product appropriately within the product hierarchy. For example, wheat is marked with a position of “First child of” relative to “R011 Cereals”.

Units of measure

A Unit of Measure, such as kilogram, liter, or meter.

Unit of measure contain the following fields:

  • Abbreviation: A short name for the unit to be displayed in the database.

  • Unit type: The type of unit. Choices include weight, volume, item, area, yield, percentage and length. 

  • Aliases: A list of alternate names for the product.

  • Description: Any extra information or detail that is relevant to the unit of measure.

The unit of measure screen also contains conversions for the unit of measure into alternative units. This allows the system to convert any unit of measure contained in the BSS to a standard unit.
