This page covers the process for preparing and uploading markets in the FEWS NET Data Warehouse (FDW).
Preparing a markets upload file
A markets upload file typically includes the following columns:
-
Market: The name of the market.
-
Country: The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 two letter code for the country the market is located in.
-
Urban_rural: Indicate whether the market is urban or rural.
-
Latitude: The latitude for the market.
-
Longitude: The longitude for the market.
-
Code: Assign a unique FEWS NET ID (FNID) to avoid issues with similarly named markets. Markets are coded with the country code, year, the unit type “M” and level. For example, KE0000M001. See FEWS NET IDs for more info.
-
Parent: The FNID for the parent administrative unit of the market. The parent administrative unit should be included if sub-national boundaries are available in the FDW and the geographic location (i.e: lat/long) of the town is available. Access FNIDs on the Spatial Administrative Units page in FDW.
-
The
market_admin1ormarket_admin2relationships will be automatically created upon upload. To create both Admin 1 and Admin 2 relationships, list Admin 2 FNIDs under the Parent column and include an extra Admin 1 column. -
If Admin 2 boundaries are not available, list the Admin 1 units in the Parent column.
-
If you need to determine the administrative boundary the market is located in, use any GIS software (i.e. QGIS or ArcGIS) to overlay the market coordinates on top of the subnational boundaries for the relevant country.
-
-
Aliases: Alternative names that the market is known by (optional).
-
Start month: The first month of the market year. This field in FDW will default to January if not indicated.
When possible, use geographic coordinates from a GPS unit or the secondary source. If these options are not available, it is acceptable to determine the location from a Google search. You may use an approximate location, such as the town center instead of the exact market location.
Uploading markets
Pre-upload requirements
In FDW, markets are attributed to a Geographic Unit Set and Source Document that are specific to markets for a given country.
For example, markets in Kenya are added to the following:
Geographic Unit Set: Kenya - Market Geographic Unit Set
Source Document: FEWS NET: Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), Kenya, Markets
The Geographic Unit Set and Source Document must be set up in FDW before uploading markets. For instructions on these tasks, see Geographic Unit Sets and Source Organizations and Source Documents.
Upload steps
Use the following steps to upload markets in bulk from a file:
-
Go to Metadata Management > Spatial > Markets.
-
Select Import Markets.
-
Select the File and File format.
-
Select Submit.
You can also add markets individually by selecting the Add Market button from the Markets admin screen.
Once the markets have been added to FDW, you can create Data Series for the market products by going to Dataseries Management > Price > Market Products.
