Livelihoods

Livelihoods information is stored in two different FEWS NET applications:

  • The FDW stores original sources of Livelihoods information, such as BSS and LIAS files, as Assets attached to a Data Collection.

  • The Livelihoods Explorer application is used to store individual data points for Livelihoods.

Using the FDW to store Livelihood files allows for ease of access and fine-grain sharing permissions. To add a new file, follow the processes outlined below.

Add a source document

  1. Go to Metadata Management > Warehouse > Source documents.

  2. Select Add Source document.

  3. Complete fields as follows:

    1. Source Organization: Select FEWS NET.

    2. Source Document: The document name should be formatted as [Document type], [Country]. For example, Livelihoods Impact Analysis Spreadsheet, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    3. Document Type: Select the appropriate document type. This should be LIAS, NatLIAS, or BSS for Livelihoods information.

    4. Country: Select the relevant country.

    5. Usage Policy: Select FEWS NET Only.

    6. Usage Policy Reason: Select FEWS NET Only.

    7. Usage Policy Justification: Add something like “Public access is available, on request only.”

    8. Source Type: Microsoft Excel or the appropriate option.

    9. Schedule: Select Ad Hoc from the Schedule drop down menu.

  4. Select Save.

Add a data collection

  1. Go to Data Entry > Add a new Data Collection (manually or by uploading a file).

  2. Complete fields as follows:

    1. Source Document: Choose the Source Document you just created, or a relevant source document.

    2. Collection Date: Use the first day of the month for the report period.

    3. File: Do not add a file using the Choose File button. The file will be added in the next step.

  3. Select Save and continue editing.

Add an asset

  1. From the Data Collection screen, click Add new Data Collection Asset.

  2. Complete fields as follows:

    1. Collection: Choose the Data Collection you just created.

    2. Display name: Optionally add a user friendly display name.

    3. Uploaded file: Click Choose File and add your file here.

    4. File format: Choose the correct file format, most likely csv, xls, or xlsx.

    5. Usage policy: Leave blank. The asset will inherit the policy of the source document.

  3. Click Save.
