Import Dependency Dashboard

The Import Dependency Dashboard uses data from UN Comtrade, UN Development Programme (UNDP), and LandScan to visualize the dependence of multiple countries on imports of various products. Users can select the products and export countries and filter import countries based on Indicators such as Human Development Index (HDI) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicators.

Use case

Visualize the 2016 - 2020 combined average imports per capita (kg/person) of wheat imported from the Russian Federation and Ukraine to countries where 50 to 75 percent of the population is below the national poverty line.

A product, countries, an X axis indicator and indicator category can be selected to create the visualization. Color coded bubbles reflect FEWS NET presence, remote monitoring, and other destination countries.

Options

The available parameters for the Visualizations are:

  • Products: Default is wheat grain R01112

  • Countries: Default is Russian Federation and Ukraine

  • X-axis Indicator:

    • Human Development Index (Default option)

    • Population below national poverty line (%)

    • Prevalence of undernourishment (%)

  • Indicator category: Default shows all possible indicator categories

    • Options in this category depend on the x-axis indicator that is selected. Choosing a category narrows the range of the x-axis in the first Visualization and the countries represented in the second and third Visualizations.

Visualizations

Imports from selected countries vs selected x-axis indicator

This scatter plot shows the percent of imports from 2016-2020 for the crop and export countries selected in the options section. Countries can be grouped along the x-axis according to any of the available Indicators in the options section. The size of each country’s bubble represents the 2016-2020 combined average imports per capita (kg/person).

Additional information on the impacts for each country can be accessed by hovering your mouse over the country bubble.

Exports from selected countries vs year

This bar graph shows the total of all exports per year for the crop and export countries selected in the options section. Each color in the stacked bar corresponds to exports for that year from a selected country or a combined total of exports from all non-selected countries.

Additional information can be accessed by hovering your mouse over each section of the stacked bars.

To view data for a single country, click on the corresponding country bubble in the scatter plot. To view data for a subset of countries, select an Indicator category. To view the data for all countries, clear the Indicator category.

Exports from selected countries vs import countries

This bar graph shows the total of all exports from 2012-2021 for the crop and export countries selected in the options section. Each color in the stacked bar corresponds to the imports from a selected country or a combined total of imports from all non-selected countries.

Additional information can be accessed by hovering your mouse over each section of the stacked bars.

To view data for a single country, click on the corresponding country bubble in the scatter plot. To view data for a subset of countries, select an indicator category. To view the data for all countries, clear the Indicator category.
